Clay and Aloe shampoo to remove oil from hair

I formulated this for after an Ayurvedic treatment of shirodhara where warm oil is poured over your head —ahhhhh hello relaxation—until you have to wash it out.

This works incredibly well and can also be used as a shampoo even if oil was not poured over your head. It has a nice shelf life and can sit in your shower for a couple weeks. I use it as a stand alone shampoo when I just need a quick hair wash. It’s awesome for salty hair as well if you happen to swim in the ocean.

100mL Bentonite Clay
100mL Aloe
50mL Apple cider vinegar
Place all ingredients in an 8 ounce jar and shake well. This is enough for several to many shampooing-s depending on how much hair you have.

To use: Rinse out hair in the shower, then scoop out and apply to scalp massaging with your fingertips. Massage it to the ends of your hair. Let it sit on your hair for couple minutes, then rinse out.

Caution: Do not get it in your eyes or use it on your face —the apple cider vinegar is too strong for most facial skin types.

If you did have a full shirodhara treatment and there is a lot of oil in your hair I recommend first washing you hair with coconut milk and aloe hair conditioning shampoo — the coconut milk will pull the oils out of or you hair. Then wash again with the clay and aloe shampoo recipe above.

Follow up with an Apple Cider Conditioning rinse if you have long hair and need to get tangles out. Add 1/8 cup ACV to 3/4 cup water or hydrosol. I like to add 3 drops of rosemary essential oil.  Pour over scalp from the top and the back. Gently Massage through hair and rinse out with cool water.

After I am out of the shower I then do a spritz or two of my leave-in hair conditioner and comb out my hair.

Benefits:

Bentonite Clay: Helps absorb excess oil and impurities from the scalp.

Aloe Vera: Nourishes and hydrates the hair, promoting a healthy scalp.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): Restores scalp pH —our scalp is slightly acidic and shampoos are alkaline. Along with correcting pH balance, ACV helps the outer layer of our hair (the cuticle) relax and lie flatter allowing your hair to shine instead of frizz.
ACV dissolves residue from styling products, hard water minerals and oil. It also can support dandruff control due to its mild antimicrobial properties. And it detangles and softens hair.

This recipe is effective for detoxifying hair and scalp, removing buildup, leaving it clean and refreshed.
