Combine 1/2 tsp of the clay mixture with 1/4 tsp honey, and a squirt or two of hydrosol to form a paste.

Wait until clay is semi-dry but not completely dry, then remove the mask in a shower, or a wet/steamy cloth, using gentle upward strokes. After clay mask, apply a toner, and then moisturizer or facial oil. End with a spritz of hydrosol to help seal in the moisture.

Black turmeric (some call it blue, however it is the same plant just depends on which country you are in —India calls it black turmeric while in Vietnam its called blue turmeric) is in the same family as the orange turmeric we have become familiar with —they both belong to the Ginger family. As such it is a powerful anti-inflammatory for the skin, it has strong antioxidant effects protecting cells from oxidative stress and preventing aging of the skin. It also has many anti-microbial effects that protect the skin against bacteria, fungus, parasites, and viruses. In India it is often used for face packs to promote glowing skin. The turmeric in this recipe is grown here on Maui, dried and powdered by me.

Pearl powder promotes a brighter more radiant complexion due to its amino acids and trace minerals. It protects against free radical damage reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It is also rich in calcium and antioxidants that enhance collagen production. It also helps to improve skin texture, tone, and moisture retention.

Pearl powder can also be used on sensitive skin, it has soothing properties that calm redness and inflammation.

And I combine these with French Green Clay — it’s a mineral-rich marvel that acts like a sponge to absorb impurities and oils from the skin. Scientifically, it’s known for its ion exchange properties, which means it can swap its minerals for toxins. Some of its minerals include montmorillonite and mineral oxides such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, dolomite, silica, manganese, phosphorous, silicon, copper, and selenium.

And then I added Magnolia essential oil, research published in Frontiers in Microbiology demonstrates how magnolia oil damages bacteria at a microscopic level. It also provides antioxidant benefits that help neutralize free radicals linked to aging of the skin. The active terpenoid compounds work synergistically, making it effective even against antibiotic resistant bacteria. And then we have it’s scent, a sweet floral scent that promotes feelings of relaxation and peace, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression when inhaled. Topically, it improves skin’s elasticity, tone, texture, brightness and appearance by moisturizing dry patches.
